To the neutral, we deserved a draw but lost 0-1 to the Villans at the Gtech. Although we soon will have some players returning from long-term injury, this week we lost another two, Kayode and Carvalho. We started brightly but then sat back and after a first half of only a few good chances for each side, it was goalless at half time. There was one incident, a blatant back pass that their keeper picked up and it wasn't given as a free kick. After 4 minutes of the second half, Villa broke away and Watkins's shot was deflected past Flekken (although he still should have saved it) for the only goal of the game. Villa thought they had a second several minutes later when Watkins put through Rogers to score but VAR ruled that Watkins was narrowly offside. Then it was all Bees applying really heavy pressure with Villa blocking shots, last ditch tackles (mainly by Disasi) and Lewis-Potter hitting the foot of the post. Then a breakaway from Villa saw Watkins have only Flekken to beat but a combination. of a poor chip and a good save prevented another goal. We just couldn't provide the final touch to get what would have been a well deserved equaliser. I was perplexed at Thomas Frank's tactics of numerous crosses into the box as they were almost always cleared by the Villa defence, something we did against Spurs where it also had no effect. This combined with Mbeumo having a very quiet game meant the match ended with another home defeat. We had two good penalty shouts in the the second half that the ref didn't give and VAR didn't overrule him. Yet had he given them I bet VAR wouldn't have overruled him either!
